9.24.11So grateful to be able to participate in the Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes event on behalf of my father and now deceased grandmother (2009). I was a bit nervous since I haven't been walking like I should have this year. My thighs were initially burning but I pressed on. And it always helps when you walk through a scenic part of town with beautiful homes, like in Grant Park.This precious little boy (his name escapes me) has diabetes. He was so well-spoken and knowledgeable about his health. Proud of his parents for teaching him well. What a spirit.

As I was walking to my car, I saw a tweet saying that there'd be free tacos from my favorite food truck: Yumbii. You better believe I got to Atlantic Station in a New York minute! Free tacos and fries, compliments of ABC's new show, The Chew.

 

Later on that day, I attended a panel discussion at Spelman College. The panelists included: Nina Brown (former producer for the Frank and Wanda Morning Show on V103/11 Alive On-Air Personality), Saptosa Foster (Managering partner of the 135th Street Agency), Nicci Gilbert (former lead singer of R&B group Brownstone), Angela Gomes (writer, producer and director for tv and film), Renee Knorr (Former International Model/Fashion & Beauty Director of 19th Hole Magazine), and Jazzy McBee (On-Air Personality at Hot 107.9).

 

The discussion was called The Sex Kitten vs. The Super Brain: a panel discussion on African-American women in media. We discussed the negative images of women ( i.e. Basketball Wives) and how we can use our mic (social media) to change the stereotypes. I mean really, this discussion could've gone on for hours because women are portrayed so poorly in the media. It will be an ongoing conversation that I'm pleased to know the young ladies at Spelman College are willing to continue.
