Style Spotlight: Bessie Akuba Winn-Afeku

I've met many people in my life but I never thought I would come across meaningful people through social media. I would read this particular woman's tweets and think, man, she sounds like someone I could hang out with in real life. And we did finally have lunch. Sure enough, her personality online matched her real life persona. I love when that happens. Fast forward to this present moment and she's still someone who inspires me. She knows what she wants, she's aware of her intrinsic power and then she makes magical things happen.Glad to have this creative lady in my life.

Tell us your name, where you're from and what you do.My name is Bessie Akuba Winn-Afeku, I was born in Ghana, West Africa and raised in Atlanta, GA. I am a photographer, a social artist, founder/creator of The She is Me Program and Life & Composition.A) How did you know what you're doing is your calling?Loaded question..lol..but to put it simply, I know because I am the happiest when I do it. I feel the most like myself when I am doing it.B) You're a mom, former beauty queen, writer, a friend who designed my new blog banner and icons (ha!!), a world traveler and so many other amazing things. With your busy schedule, how do you manage to do it all and still look so fabulous?lifeandcomp1Ha! How? That's a great question. I still don't know..lol...I kid. One thing that is very important is making time for yourself--everyday. When you do not feel like you are at your best or look like you feel, it will reflect on everything else that you do. So it's reaally important to umm..ya know.."not  let yourself go" and find time to take care of yourself. How would you describe your style? My style is simple but chic. Classic with a some edginess to it.A) In what ways has your African heritage influenced your style?Well, for as long as I can remember, I have always tried to incorporate some type of wax print or African material into my outfits. I grew up with a mother and aunts that wore nothing but traditional Ghanaian kaba and slit outfits at one point. So I think just being around that influence how I dressed. What celebrity inspires your style and why? There are none..yet.If you had to give all of your clothes away, what are five things that you would keep?An oxford shirt, an ankara pencil skirt, a black blazer, slim fit jeans, and a fitted grey shirt. What does having style mean to you?Style is simply..the way you do something to make it your own. What advice would you give to someone trying to find their own style?Stop looking to see what everyone else is doing. Wear it, do it, live it..for yourself.
