Jiro Dreams of Sushi

I love food. I dream about food. I do a happy dance when I get food. Sometimes, I eat just to chew. I can't eat enough food. But what of the food that I'm consuming? Have you ever stopped to think about the quality of your food? Is it healthy? Is it savory? Are you living to eat or eating to live? I realized that for the most part, I'm living to eat and not really enjoying my food. After watching Jiro Dreams of Sushi recently, I had a shift in my food mindset.Last night, I dined at Ocean Prime for the first time. Typically, I do not frequent fancy-shmancy establishments because I don't like spending a stupid amount of money on food, lol. And if I do and I end up disappointed, well, there will be hell to pay. But, to my surprise, I was very pleased with my dining experience and my meal.photo (14)I starved myself the entire day just for this meal. Do not try this at home. Lol.Although the appetizers looked appealing, I was too hungry for a tease. I was ready for the main course. I ordered the blackened snapper with wilted spinach, jalapeno corn tartar and brown sugar glazed carrots. Typically, I'd save some for leftovers but it was too good! I was FULL. Most importantly, I savored every last bite of my meal.Savoring. It's something that I always forget to do while scarfing down a meal. After watching Jiro Dreams of Sushi, I was reminded to take enjoyment in not only the taste but the craftmanship of my meal. Although this movie is about sushi, it really does a marvelous job of describing what hard work and dedication looks like.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-aGPniFvS0]Favorite quotes:

It's just about making an effort and repeating the same thing everyday. In this business, if you take it seriously, you'll become skilled. But if you want to make a mark in the world, you have to have talent. The rest depends on how hard you work. You need competition in order to improve.Always doing what you're told doesn't mean you'll succeed in life.If I don't keep working, my body will become worthless.Always look above and beyond yourself. Always try to improve on yourself. Always strive to elevate your craft.

WHAT I LEARNED:

Never stop improving.

Make lasting connections/good business partners.

Be consistent and persistent and you will build a devoted following.

It's not about the money.

Hone your skills.

Define success for yourself.

Be humble. Your work will make the noise.

EAT GOOD FOOD.
