career transition tipsTwo weeks ago, I started a new gig, 401 days since I left my last corporate position. Yes, I counted. It feels good to be back in a corporate setting. Being among peers my age for the first time is certainly welcomed. I have two computer screens, which, the non-techie in me is amazed by. I'm doing much of what I'm skilled at, social media, and learning new techniques along the way.As soon as January 1st hit, people started calling me. I am reminded that my year-long work and faith was not in vain. Hard work really does pay off. Every little step counts towards the bigger picture of your life.I wish I could say there is an easy way to getting the job/career you want but there isn't. It's all about trial and error. EFFORT is the name of the game. If you can remember, I wrote about four proactive things you could do while you were job hunting. As 2014 went on and my calendar began to fill up with tasks, I found new ways of staying proactive. Lets go over them.REVISE YOUR RESUMEA good friend of mine went out to dinner and we spent two hours editing and augmenting my resume. Side note: when you're down on your luck and you're trying to explain your situation to people, don't be offended if they're not jumping to help you. You need them. Be specific and ask for what you need help with. Anyway, she helped me soooooo much. I honestly believe that is why doors started to open up for me.GET SOCIALThis is basically the same as making connections, just online verses in person. So many brands and businesses are on social media, whether it's Twitter or LinkedIn. Find these people and stalk them. Which leads me to number three.RESEARCHI would say this is THE most important skill anyone can have. Once you've found your contact and you've looked up their background credentials (Google everyone, by the way), prepare your email. Be professional, be personal and be genuine. I swear, people will listen to you when you sound like you know what you're talking about. Take yourself seriously.Transitioning to a new career can be uncomfortable, but it doesn't have to be difficult if you're prepared. I hope these tips are helpful. If they are, please share with someone who could use them.Image Source: Pixabay
